Art with Purpose: Promoting Compassion in the Art Classroom
The purpose of this study was to attempt to instill compassion in students through the artmaking process. The ultimate goals were to inform students of their possibilities of social reform, educate them with opportunities to be compassionate, and inspire maturity of selfless behaviors through intrinsic motivation and artmaking. The big idea was to foster compassionate and caring behaviors by creating opportunities for students to demonstrate such actions. Using Participatory Action Research, a project was developed and executed, called “Altered Puzzles,” promoting social awareness of autism. The endeavor implemented compassion-based artmaking lessons using hidden and experiential instruction, modeling behaviors, and differentiating instruction. The findings resulted in a successful development of communication, understanding, and defining of compassion in action. Compassion, caring, empathy, kindness were all defined while completing this study. Compassion through artmaking is just one of many tools possible to generate social reform, improve character development, and foster tolerance in high school aged students.
