Project 1: Religious Art History
A timeline of religious art
Discussion Questions and Topics: Define religion. Discuss what religions are or were in practice. Where is religion seen in art? What role has religion played in the history of art? What religions have affected art the most?
Ask students in KWL format to identify periods in art along with artwork that they think relates to religion or has a religious affiliation. Discuss goals and objectives for learning about religion in art.
Activity: Review the painting the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. Discuss its meaning and symbolic elements. Also look over the work of contemporary artist Graham Braddock. Compare and contrast his work Wall of Jerusalem Prayer as well as others with Leonardo Da Vinci's work. Discuss the Catholic Church as an example of religion. Bring the two discussions together showing how there is a relationship between religion and art.
Have students split into groups. Each group is to identify and list several religions in society. As a class we discuss the lists and assign a religion to each group. The groups will research the meaning and what makes it a religion. They will discuss the time periods that religion is recognized throughout art history leading up to contemporary art. The groups will create a timeline discussing famous art and its relationship with their chosen religion. Each timeline will include dates, time periods (5 minimum), artist information and images of artwork. An example to review would be a timeline covering Cave paintings (Lascaux, Spain), Renaissance (Simone Martini), Surrealism (Dali), Modernism (Francesco Clemente) and Contemporary art (Adrian Kellard) as seen through the eyes of the Catholic Religion. The format of the presentation assignment will be in PDF, power point or hand drawn poster. The timelines must include female artists and span a minimum of 500 years. Each group will be differentiated for the level of learning exemplified by the students.
The groups will present their work to the class and discuss their findings. Some of the topics they will be discussing include time periods, religious affiliation or connection, content of the artwork, meanings and theories by art historians, and personal interpretations of the works. Students will show examples of the art in their presentations.
Sample Artists
Lascaux Cave Paintings, Simone Martini, Salvador Dali, Francesco Clemente, Adrian Kellard, Leonardo da Vinci
Materials: Computer, MS Office (Word or Powerpoint), printer, poster, markers, ruler, scissors, glue
Research document: PROJECT 1.doc
Assessment: Peer to Peer evaluation, To what extent are students able to connect religion with art? How has religion changed art over time?
Students will be charged with evaluating other students in the class through verbal discussion and question & answer. At the end of each group presentation they will ask a variety of questions to the presenters. These questions will be a discovery of: How has religion changed art over time? And to what extent are students able to connect religion with art?
Ask students to create a list of questions for the presenters ahead of time.
