The Memory Project Gallery by Ben Shumaker

This is a very special assignment that my class takes part in each year as money allows. These artworks are made for children from less than desirable living circumstances, most of whom have very few personal belongings and very little connection to the outside world. My kids create a portrait of these children and it is delivered to each child personally by way of the Memory Project Organization. This lesson reaches far beyond any state curriculum guide to the deepest soul of our students, reaching for those lifelong skills of developing altruistic behaviors. It is both a heart wrenching and an emotionally touching process that draws the students back each year. This one of the most successful and favorite projects of the program.
